CrossFader's Easy Guide to Record Ratings
Share
Hey there! If you've got vinyl records or are thinking about getting some, it's good to know how we talk about their condition. It's like checking the condition of anything you buy used – you want to know what you're getting!
We use something called the Goldmine Grading Standard. It's just a way to describe how a record looks and sounds.
And here’s a tip from us: we aim for greatness, not perfection. Records get played, they get loved, and sometimes they show it. That's part of their story! We just want to give you an honest picture so you can enjoy your music.
90% of our vinyl product falls between VG and VG+, and if it's not, we won't sugarcoat it. We will be upfront and honest about it.
Here’s a quick and easy rundown of the different grades:
Mint (M)
This record is basically brand new, never played. It’s perfect! The cover also looks brand new. To maintain its pristine condition, always store this record upright in a protective outer sleeve, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Handle only by the edges, and clean with a high-quality carbon fiber brush before and after each play (if opened).
Near Mint (NM or M-)
This record is almost perfect, maybe played once or twice super carefully. It looks and sounds amazing, like new. The cover looks almost new, maybe just a tiny hint it's been touched. To maintain its pristine condition, always store this record upright in a protective outer sleeve, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Handle only by the edges, and clean with a high-quality carbon fiber brush before and after each play (if opened).
Very Good Plus (VG+) or Excellent (EX)
This record has been played, but it's still in great shape. You might see a few light marks that don't mess with the sound, and maybe a tiny bit of quiet crackle in silent parts. The cover looks good, but you can tell it's been handled, perhaps with a light circle mark or a tiny corner bend. To maintain its pristine condition, always store this record upright in a protective outer sleeve, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Handle only by the edges, and clean with a high-quality carbon fiber brush before and after each play (if opened).
Very Good (VG)
This record has been enjoyed quite a bit. You'll hear some pops and clicks, and see some scratches. But the important part is, it plays all the way through without skipping! The cover shows noticeable wear, including ring wear, worn edges, and maybe some splits that have been taped. It's clearly a used record. To maintain its pristine condition, always store this record upright in a protective outer sleeve, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Handle only by the edges, and clean with a high-quality carbon fiber brush before and after each play (if opened).
Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
This record has been played A LOT. Expect plenty of noise, scratches, and wear. It should still play without skipping, but it won't sound pretty. The cover will look rough, with big tears, heavy tape, water damage, or lots of writing. To maintain its pristine condition, always store this record upright in a protective outer sleeve, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Handle only by the edges, and clean with a high-quality carbon fiber brush before and after each play (if opened).
Fair (F) / Poor (P)
These records are in bad shape. They might skip, be warped, or have deep scratches. Listening might be tough or impossible. Usually, these are only for super rare records. The cover is usually trashed – ripped, stained, or missing pieces. To maintain its pristine condition, always store this record upright in a protective outer sleeve, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Handle only by the edges, and clean with a high-quality carbon fiber brush before and after each play (if opened).
So, that's the Goldmine Grading Standard in a nutshell! It helps us all understand each other when talking about vinyl. Every purchase from CrossFader goes back into building a better and stronger business, ensuring we can continue sharing our passion for music. It helps you get a fair deal and know what to expect for your collection.
A little extra peace of mind: Every record you buy from us comes with a clear, protective sleeve on the outside cover. Inside, you'll find either the album's original sleeve or a brand new, acid-free sleeve to keep your vinyl safe. If a record doesn't quite meet the "Very Good" (VG) standard, we'll make sure to clearly tell you about its condition before you buy.
